Job Summary:

Arlington Heights School District 25 has an opening for a Director of Special Services for the 2012-2013 school year.  The Director of Special Services reports directly to the Assistant Superintendent for Student Learning.  Compensation is competitive in the northwest suburbs and is based upon training and experience.


Qualifications

    possess or be eligible for a valid Illinois Administrator's certificate (Type 75) with a Director of Special Education endorsement.demonstrated professional growth through advanced study beyond the Master's degreesuccessful administrative experience, particularly in the field of special education and related areas of staff development, group facilitation, and planning;high levels of effective leadership skills;possess a commitment to educational excellence and demonstrate the capacity for strong and energetic leadership;genuine concern for people and a record which clearly demonstrates patterns for strength, trust, open communication, and a high degree of effective personnel interactions;possess the ability and demonstrate a predisposition to use a collaborative approach to problem solving while still accepting the responsibility for administrative decisions;demonstrated, well-developed insight into the educational interest of the public(s) to be served;the ability to effectively communicate with staff, parents, community members, and the Board of Education; anda high degree of integrity, a strong sense of purpose, and the personal strength to face challenges with humor and courage.
              

Performance Responsibilities

The specific duties and responsibilities of the Director of Special Services shall be to:

 

    facilitate and participate in the establishment of a long range plan for the district's special services program;assist in the initiation and planning of a comprehensive program evaluation including needs assessment and goal setting for special education programming;provide on-site coordination of special services for special education students including diagnostic, prescriptive, and remedial programs;provide supervision and evaluation of special services personnel together with appropriate specialists and general education administrators;design appropriate activities and programs for staff development in the area of special services;coordinate initial and continuing placement of students in all areas of special education outside their local attendance center;provide site coordination designed to enhance communication with NSSEO and to insure effective coordination with the regular programs and services of the school district;supervise the school health program;file the student census and other appropriate reports necessary for special education and other program reimbursement;work in cooperation with the Assistant Superintendent for Business in developing in developing the special education portion of the budget and the completion of those claims and forms relative to special services;work in coordination and with the Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Planning in determining and providing for the personnel needs for all district special services programs;plan for the transportation needs of special education children in cooperation with the Transportation Departmentserve as the district Section 504 (Rehabilitation Act of 1973) coordinator;serve as a resource to all District 25 staff in regard to the legal aspects of special education;coordinate the district's special education extended school year program for eligible students;mediate disputes between parents and the school districtserve as coordinator of services under the American with Disabilities Act;coordinate the district RtI programserve as the district truancy officer;serve as the district homeless liaison;serve as the district liaison to the Arlington Heights Park District in regard to Children at Play (CAP) before-and after-school daycare program and Junior Activity Zone (JAZ);provide support to staff regarding homebound tutoring and home/hospital services;serve as a resource to building staff in regard to DCFS reporting;provide general administrative support to the Assistant Superintendent for Student Learning; andperform such other duties as may be directed by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee.
