Torrington is the largest city in Litchfield County in the picturesque northwest corner of Connecticut and yet retains some of the flavor of a small town. It is located 28 miles from Hartford, 22 miles from Waterbury, 90 miles form New York City, and 120 miles from Boston. Settled in 1740 and incorporated as a city in 1923, Torrington is the industrial, commercial, and financial hub of Northwest Connecticut. The historic Warner Theater in Torrington serves as a performing arts center, hosting a number of state and nationally recognized performing groups, including the Nutmeg Conservatory.
As the largest school district the county, the Torrington Public Schools enroll an increasingly diverse population, with approximately 5,000 students in grades Pre-K through 12. Students consistently score well above the national averages on standardized achievement tests. Students also score well on the Connecticut Mastery Test and the Connecticut Academic Performance Test. The Torrington School District is known for its quality programs for students with special needs within the mainstream of all its school.
