POSITION SUMMARY:

 

The primary goal of the Licensed School Nurse is to maintain and/or improve the physical, emotional, and environmental health of students.  The Licensed School Nurse works cooperatively with the Health Assistant and Student Support Team (SST) in order to accommodate the health needs of students.


 

 

 

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:


 

 

1.     Work as a team with other district nurses to carry out multiple screening programs throughout district schools.  Accepting responsibility to perform screening programs such as vision, hearing, scoliosis, and early childhood screening.  Writing necessary physician referrals as a result of these screenings.

2.     Attend building Student Support Team (SST) meetings and provide necessary health information or direction.

3.     Attend Individual Student Staffing meetings for those students with health impairments or issues.

4.     Assist to identify and plan for any health/special needs a student may posses.

5.     Act as a liaison between the school team and a student’s physician in order to obtain the appropriate health information necessary to write a student Individual Education Plan (IEP), 504 Accommodation Plan, or Individual Health Plan (IHP).

6.     Develop an Individual Health Plan (IHP) for all students needing Health Services interventions during the school day in order to assist their education.  Schedule any necessary conferences with parents and/or teachers to share these health concerns and the plan of action to accommodate the student(s).

7.     Develop Emergency Care Plans for all students with a potential health emergency during the school day.  Schedule any necessary conferences with parents and/or teachers to share these health emergencies and the plan of action to accommodate the students(s).

8.     Assist the Student Support Team (SST) with student excessive absenteeism when there appears to be a health issue involved.

9.     Assist in facilitating the homebound instruction for students with chronic or acute health needs according to district procedure.

10.  Assist in the reporting process of possible child abuse and/or neglect.

11.  Act as a member of the Student Crisis Team.

12.  Assist in the control of communicable diseases.  Consult with county epidemiology personnel when necessary and advise school staff and parents in order to protect students from the spread of communicable diseases.

13.  Perform counseling to students in need, such as pregnancy, medical needs, or mental health issues.  Referring to appropriate school and/or outside community agencies when necessary.

14.  Network with community agencies to facilitate the needs of students and families.

15.  Perform student or classroom teaching as it relates to health information.

16.  Maintain student health information on emergency cards, immunization status, Pupil Health Records, and the SASI or other computer systems.

17.  Provide daily emergency care to students with injuries and illnesses that occur during the school day.  Maintain a ‘Daily Log’ of students visiting the Health Office listing their chief complaint, treatment, and outcome for each student.

18.  Administer daily medications to students according to school district procedures.

19.  Compile a list of ‘Special Medical Students’ within the building.

20.  Compile a ‘Medication List’ of all students with a medication at school.

21.  Maintain a log of health services to special education students.  Listing one week of each month the time appropriated to students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP).

22.  Complete the annual state reports for Immunizations, Vision & Hearing Screening, and Scoliosis Screening.

23.  Complete the annual Year- End Report for health services.

24.  Delegate appropriate procedures to building Health Assistant(s) or Health Care Specialist(s).  This process must be in accordance with current district delegation procedures.

25.  Assist the Health Service Coordinator in any other assigned projects or duties.

26.  Other duties as assigned.


  

JOB SPECIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, LICENSE, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES):

 

Required:

 

  • Licensed by the Minnesota Board of Nursing as a current REGISTERED NURSE and PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE.
  • Licensed by the Minnesota Department of Children, Families and Learning as a current LICENSED SCHOOL NURSE.
  • Current certification in CPR and First Aid from a recognized organization.
  •   Communicates with students, parents, co-workers, supervisors, and the community in a positive and responsive way that is consistently welcoming and enhances effective work relationships.
  •   Demonstrates an appreciation of diversity in all interactions and job functions.
