Primary Responsibilities:

Ensure the safe and continuous operation of the Midland Public Schools motorized fleet. Develop and coordinate a preventive maintenance plan and also assess and analyze problems that occur as part of the daily operation of the District's vehicles. The head mechanic supervises and prioritizes the maintenance and emergency repair work conducted by the mechanical staff to ensure effective and reliable service.

  Experience/Qualifications:

o     Master Mechanics license in automotive and heavy truck repair ( must obtain within first 90 days of employment).

o     Minimum of five years of successful experience as a licensed mechanic.

o     Experience as a repair shop manager preferred.

o     Knowledge of public school transportation operations is desirable.

o     Capable of performing all functions of a general mechanic.

o     Skilled in body and paint repair.

o     Must have basic computer skills (email, Microsoft Office or similar application).

o     Maintains commercial driver license (CDL) with endorsements to drive a school bus and tow truck.

o     Holds safety of students, as well as employees, as the highest priority.

o     Develops and monitors preventive maintenance programs.

o     Orders replacement parts and is responsible for the stockroom and the parts inventory.

o     Uses purchasing card, assigns account numbers to purchases with online account management system, balances monthly statements, prepares requisitions for purchase orders.

o     Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, vendors, and members of the community.

o     Prepares technical specifications for vehicle and equipment replacement.

o     Schedules mechanical staff to ensure efficient operation of the bus garage.

o     Works with other departments to ensure the smooth operation of the entire district.

o     Knowledgeable in Federal, State of Michigan, and local Board of Education policies and procedures as they relate to public school transportation.

o     Reports to the Transportation Manager and the Associate Superintendent for Finance, Facilities and Operations.

o     Serve on District committees as requested.
