general description (1-3 lines describing role):

1.  Provide academic and social enrichment and support to METCO students in the high schools.

2.  Monitor the academic performance of METCO students as well as develop and implement strategies to enhance academic achievement and maximize the opportunities for METCO students to move into honors and advanced placement courses.

3.  Has responsibilities in the developmental needs of Boston students.  Will actively support student academic achievement, cultural and social adjustment of students and families and develop strong and collaborative relationships with faculty and staff.

 

 

 

Qualifications:

 

-      Experience (Required/Preferred)

DOE Certification in Guidance, Adjustment Counselor, Literacy

Demonstrated success working with students and families of color in both academic and social settings

Teaching/Counseling experience at secondary level 6 - 12.

-      Degree (Required/Preferred)

Master’s Degree, or equivalent experience

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (not limited to):

1.  To provide academic and social enrichment and support for Boston students   

2.  To serve as a liaison for Boston parents by maintaining phone and email contact

3.  To consult with classroom teachers, guidance counselors and  students           

4.  To perform other duties as assigned by the METCO Director.

                        a. Meet individually with students to establish and monitor goals related to school performance                             by, reviewing past performance and study habits, identifying barriers to academic                                      achievement, and developing strategies to address barriers.

                         b. Meets with faculty members to: A) Identify individual and general academic problem areas                              and to strategize solutions together; B) increase sensitivity to and understanding of the                                 METCO students’ individual and collective experience.

5.  Develop group activities (small group activities, whole group with outside speakers and/or field trips)     for Boston high school students to address concerns.

6.  Work with students, faculty and parents to maintain high performance expectations of Boston students.

7.  Assists in producing METCO parent newsletter to enhance school/family communication and   connection by   sharing information about school and METCO activities, community resources and student’s achievements via website.

8. Acts as resource to staff in the on-going development of a multicultural program.

9. Consult regularly with teachers and guidance counselors to assess the academic and social progress of Boston students

10. Serve as a member of evaluation teams and participate in parent/teacher conferences.

11. Supplement the guidance department in facilitating career planning and college placement.      

12. Maintain high academic and behavioral standards for Boston students.
