JOB TITLE:
Individual Care Aide/Classroom

JOB GOAL:
To assist the assigned student in making
progress towards his/her IEP goals while operating under the
direction of the classroom teacher.
To assist the classroom or itinerant teacher
in maintaining and delivering appropriate classroom
activities in an environment that allows students to learn
effectively.
REPORTS TO:
Classroom Teacher & OTHS Director of
Special Services/Administration
QUALIFICATIONS:
1.
Must meet ISBE and NCLB requirements for
paraprofessionals
2.
Must be highly dependable with regard to regular
work attendance and punctual arrival
3.
Must possess the ability to work well with
students, staff, and parents
4.
Must possess personal fitness sufficient to
participate in:
(a)
safe therapeutic physical restraints under the
guidance of trained certified staff members;
(b)
safe lifting and transferring of students when
needed;
(c)
the exertion of force from 20 to 100 pounds as
needed;
(d)
active physical interaction and supervision
during instructional and recreational programming.
Alternatives to the above qualifications may
be considered by the Director of Special Services, Principal,
and/or the Superintendent depending on the specifics of the
position.
DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
1.
Assist the student with learning as directed by
the classroom teacher.
2.
Provide assistance to the student when medical
issues arise.
3.
Assist the classroom teacher and other
paraprofessionals with various situations that arise in the
classroom setting.
4.
Engage with the student on a one-on-one basis to
implement goals under the direction of the classroom
teacher.
5.
Prepare and review the assigned student's daily
agenda.
6.
Assist the assigned student with organizational
tasks.
7.
Assist with the selection and retrieval of meals
for the assigned student during the school day.
8.
Supervise the assigned student in a variety of
settings during the instructional day under the guidance of the
classroom teacher.
9.
Assist the assigned student with getting on and
off the school bus safely.
10.
Assist the assigned student on activities
related to his/her IEP goals as directed by the classroom
teacher.
11.
Engage in activities related to the
transportation of the child to and from the classroom.
12.
Clean and store classroom materials used by the
student(s).
13.
Maintain communication with the assigned
student's parents under the supervision/guidance of the
classroom teacher.
14.
Take measures to maintain classroom safety for
the benefit of the students and anyone present in the
educational environment.
15.
Assist the assigned student with daily living
tasks (e.g. toileting, hygiene, feeding, etc.).
16.
Assist the assigned student with various types
of communication activities.
17.
Assist with the implementation of the assigned
student's Behavior Intervention Plan as directed by the
classroom teacher.
18.
Serve as a student advocate.
19.
Assist the assigned student, in various ways,
during inclusion activities that are both academic and
non-academic in nature.
20.
Adhere to the principles of the Crisis
Prevention Institute (CPI) when behavioral issues arise.
21.
Assist with data collection and recording under
the direction of the classroom teacher.
22.
Clean and sanitize areas of the instructional
setting as directed by the classroom teacher.
23.
Complete the paperwork necessary for Medicaid
reimbursement, if applicable.
24.
Assist related service staff members in
providing services to the assigned student.
25.
Assist the assigned student in benefiting from
community experience activities.
26.
Monitor the assigned student during class
exchanges.
27.
Assist in behavior management techniques under
the direction of the classroom teacher.
28.
Adhere to the directives of the classroom
teacher.
29.
Assist in setting up and putting away classroom
equipment and materials.
30.
Assist in creating a safe and appropriate
environment for instruction.
31.
Assist in implementing and recording data
according to the students' IEPs.
32.
Track and record student behavioral data.
33.
Assist in demonstrating everyday social skills
to the children in the assigned classroom.
34.
Assist students with inclusion
activities.
35.
Establish purposeful relationships with the
students.
36.
Assist the students in becoming more
independent.
37.
Work to maintain the personal care of the
students in the assigned classroom.
38.
Assist students in completion of their classroom
assignments.
39.
Prepare food, deliver meals/snacks, and assist
the students with feeding activities.
40.
Assist the students with toileting activities,
including changing diapers if necessary.
41.
Help in the identification of students needing
social work assistance and/or consultation.
42.
Assist in crisis intervention activities when
necessary.
43.
Assist in preparing students for transition from
the high school setting.
44.
Accompany students to/from class as part of
assisting with inclusion.
45.
Help to maintain discipline in the classroom
setting.
46.
Prepare documentation for IEP goals and progress
reports.
47.
Assist the classroom teacher and staff in the
implementation of Aggression Replacement Training (ART) methods
as necessary.
48.
Work effectively and cooperatively as part of a
classroom team in an effort to help the students
succeed.
49.
Seek guidance from other staff members when
necessary.
50.
Engage in professional development activities as
required by supervisor.
51.
Assist with other students, if necessary, under
the direction of the classroom teacher.
52.
Maintain confidentiality at all times with
regard to students and student information.
53.
Abide by all applicable laws and comply with all
OTHS policies and procedures (e.g. business department,
attendance, computer/internet, schedule, internal paperwork,
etc.).
54.
Perform supervision duties before and after
school, as assigned by administration.
55.
Perform other duties as assigned.
OTHS has a full-time, 9-month positions starting at
$11.67/hour plus benefits. Teacher Certification preferred or
must have a minimum of 60 hours post High School Diploma work at
an accredited college, or an Associates Degree, or have passed
the WorkKeys or ParaPro Test. Candidate must also possess
the NCLB Letter of Approval from the St. Clair County Regional
Office of Education.
