FastTRAC ABE Academic Coach
One Adult Basic Education (ABE) Academic Coach position is
open through Mankato Area Adult Basic Education. The
grant-funded, temporary assignment includes:
1) Teaching two college preparation
course sections of "Pathways to Manufacturing Careers" in each of
these semesters: fall of 2012, summer of 2013, and fall of
2014. Classes will be held in the cities of Mankato, New
Ulm or Lake Crystal. Each course will run approximately 8 weeks
in length, 8 hours per week in the months prior to the college
semester start.
2) Co-teaching two manufacturing
courses at South Central College in the Spring Semester of 2013,
Fall of 2013 and spring of 2014 in collaboration with SCC college
faculty. The ABE Academic Coach will co-teach the basic
skills portion of the course in the college classroom at least
50% of the time and will hold study sessions or individualized
tutoring outside of the classroom as needed.
The clientele includes unemployed adults or dislocated
workers, academically under-prepared, low-wage adult learners who
are in need of basic skills development in order to pursue their
career goals.
Some curriculum development will be necessary. The
curriculum will include career development, basic math, blueprint
reading, workplace and college vocabulary, technical reading,
research skills, computer literacy and study skills. Online
learning platforms will be utilized in the course.
A MN teaching license (in any area k-12) is required. The
applicant should possess strong written and verbal communication
skills and be experienced and comfortable with the use of
technology in the classroom and with online learning
platforms. A willingness to learn, collaboration, teamwork,
planning and organizational skills will be essential.
This position is paid according to the ABE teaching salary
schedule, starting at $18.50 per hour.
