Lead Grounds Worker

 

One (1) Position:    District-wide Grounds

 

Position Start Date:    August 2012

 

Banded/Graded:   B-2-2

 

Responsible To:    Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds, Custodial Maintenance Supervisor

 

Position Purpose:   Maintain District grounds and fields in excellent condition.

 

Major Job Functions/Specific Tasks:   See Reverse Side

 

Qualifications:  Knowledge and significant experience in grounds and athletic field maintenance including planning, managing and supervising grounds staff in successfully implementing the twelve month plan.

 

Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

·         Evidence of an understanding of the school culture and environment, and a commitment to carrying out the vision, mission, and belief statements of District 112

·         Mechanical aptitude and abilities

·         Conflict management skills

·         Ability to train, supervise and develop personnel

·         Ability to work positively with other District employees and groups

·         Demonstrated communication skills

·         Demonstrated customer service skills

·         Knowledge of established procedures for OSHA, vehicles, machinery and other safety programs

 

Physical Requirements:            - Lift 70 lbs. waist height occasionally

                                                            -  Lift 50 lbs to chest high regularly

                                                            -  Extended walking

                                                            -  Ability to work with pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals

                                                            -  Must be in good general health

 

Summary:   The Lead Grounds Worker coordinates the grounds staff in service to all user groups, manages the maintenance and operation of various types of equipment to care for and maintain grounds and other outdoor facilities and performs related work as required.

 

Compensation and Yearly Duration of Employment:   This position is posted as a full-time (40 hours per week), twelve (12) month position, Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.  The starting salary for such a position is $19.66 per hour.   Eligible for benefits as negotiated with Union Local 70 and District 112.  This position is eligible for overtime and comp time.

Supervision

n   Assigns specific tasks for grounds maintenance

n   Assist in the training of new grounds staff

n   Prioritize workload to meet schedule requests and other work requests

Grounds Maintenance

 

n   Ability to recognize hazards and take safety precautions to eliminate them or report to supervisor

n   Maintain grounds on a continual basis so that the grounds present a premium image and fields are safe and playable.

n   Responsible for keeping walkways and parking lots  free from obstruction and in safe condition (e.g. ice & snow removal)

n   Project management of grounds related projects

n   Perform light and heavy maintenance or repairs as needed or directed on vehicles, equipment, irrigation systems, buildings, bleachers, etc.

 

n   Personal dependability and responsibility

n   Ability to follow directions

n   Ability to proactively respond to events, weather and unexpected conditions.

n   Mechanical aptitude and abilities

n   Ability to read and follow label directions

n   Simple math including proportion and ratio work necessary mixing solutions and calibrating spreaders and sprayers

Grounds Management

 

 

n   Perform sports turf and event management including field preparations for competition

n   Manage weed control, fertilization, aeration, topdressing and seeding by vendor or self-performance

n   Horticultural knowledge and management experience with shrubs, trees and flowers

n   Manages in-house snow and ice control program.

n   Manages in-house equipment and machinery maintenance and replacement program

 

n   Knowledge of and experience with sports turf and event management.   Knowledge and experience of pesticide and fertilizer management programs. 

Horticultural experience and practical knowledge.

n   Ability to plan and implement plans and vision under direction

n   Ability to work positively with user groups

n   Communication skills

n   Significant mechanical abilities

 

Enforcement of Health/Safety Policy and Procedures

 

n   Manages and conducts operation using proper safety protection and procedures

n   Follows the guidelines for chemical use as per "right to know" instructions - including proper storage of chemicals

n   Carry out the established procedures for BBP, LOTO, chainsaw safety, EMS, etc.

 

n   Ability to follow direction

n   Ability to read and follow label directions

n   Ability to give clear instructions and directions to others and lead by example
