Instructional Coach

Primary Purpose:

To provide professional development and support to teachers in order to improve student achievement.   The primary role of the Instructional Coach is to positively impact student achievement. This will be accomplished by participating in continuous school improvement efforts and by providing teachers with instructional coaching, training, and support that is aligned with district curriculum. These efforts are intended to support teachers as they provide targeted instruction and interventions for students.

Qualifications (Experience/ Education/Certification):

Bachelor's degree, valid Texas Teacher's Certificate, and two years teaching experience. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Elementary/Middle School teaching experience.

Major Responsibilities:

§   Provides coaching to instructional staff which includes, but is not limited to:

o     Demonstrate and Collaborate, Demonstrate specific strategy in classroom.

o     Discuss the session with teacher.

o     Assist teacher in planning lessons using the strategy.

o     Collaborate with teacher to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategy.

§   Guides and Assists:

o     Assist in classroom as teacher tries new strategy.

o     Hold follow-up session with teacher.

§   Provides Encouragement and Feedback:

o     Observe instruction.

o     Provides targeted feedback.

§   Coordinates and oversees:

o     Reviews lesson plans, Facilitate collaborative planning, Establish instructional norms with principal.

§   Presents and/or facilitates professional development in large and small group settings which may include:

o     Strategies for working with students in at-risk situations.

o     Classroom management, Curriculum implementation.

o     New teacher support, Differentiation ideas; core curriculum assistance.

o     Instructional strategies and resources, Grade level and department planning.

§   Attends regular training/coordination meetings with Dept of Curriculum and Instruction.

§   Assists principal and teachers in analyzing academic achievement data and other tools to formulate instructional plans.

§   Assists principal and teachers in implementing effective intervention plans for students.

§   Works, in collaboration with PISD Curriculum and Instruction Department, to facilitate district instructional initiatives.

§   Attends regular district professional development and other trainings to stay current in educational best practices.

§   Delivers district supported professional development and participates in appropriate curriculum writing projects.

§   Performs other duties as assigned.

§   Conserve electricity as outlined in the districts energy management plan

Special Knowledge/Skills:

§   Knowledge of curriculum and instruction.

§   Knowledge of acceptable coaching practices.

§   Skill in communicating effectively with others.

§   Knowledge of effective instructional practices.

§   Skill in effectively managing a classroom and student behavior.

§   Skill in using assessment results to shape instruction.

§   Skill in analyzing data and using data tools.

§   Skill in modifying instruction for various student needs.

§   Skill in working with computer tools, including but not limited to, email, internet, word processing and spreadsheets.

§   Skill in working in collaborative team-based environments.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

Working Conditions (Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Demands):

Maintain emotional control under stress; biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases; regular in-district travel; prolonged use of computer; must be able to pull/push/lift and/or carry at least 30 lbs.
