                                                            JOB DESCRIPTION

 

TITLE:                                               Department Chair

 

REPORTS TO:                             Program Supervisor or

District Assistant Superintendent of Instruction

 

SUPERVISES:                              Assists in supervision of teachers and paraprofessionals in the assigned areas

 

QUALIFICATIONS:                    Degree in a field related to position

Five years successful teaching experience with at least three years successful teaching experience in the field or related fields.

 Master's degree

Such alternatives to the above as the board may find appropriate and acceptable

 

EVALUATION:                               Evaluation conducted in accordance with District and Cooperative guidelines.                        

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:       Year-to-year under separate stipend contract for services provided 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Technical Skills:                   

·          Teaches/supervises one or two classes/duties, as   assigned

·          Assists principals in supervision of teachers in assigned areas

·          Plans, organizes and presides over district and department meetings and certain in-service/institute days

·          Participates on curriculum committees, as assigned

·          Promotes and holds in-service education and curriculum orientation for staff, and promotes professional growth by encouraging teachers to participate in professional activities (conferences, course work, meetings, etc.)

·          Assists teachers in the development of effective teaching techniques, and gives demonstration lessons when appropriate

·          Coordinates, with the Program Supervisor/Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, school-to-school continuity in curriculum, instructional materials and procedures, departmental curriculum revisions, and rewriting and review of course proposals

·          Assists with testing programs, student teachers, textbook selection, district reports, and planning extended school year programs

·          Facilitates communication between program staff and general educators regarding mainstreaming schedules and student mainstreaming

·          Collaborates, as necessary, with site administration regarding program direction, mainstreaming, staff issues/concerns, extra-curricular programs, and specific student needs

·          Meets systematically with program staff assigned to the program site to facilitate communication: between Cooperative supervisor and staff, specific students issues and building issues

·          Meets systematically with Program Supervisor regarding staff/student issues/concerns, the development and management of staff/student schedules, and extra-curricular activities including staff/student participation

·          Coordinates and arranges for visitations, open houses and other special occurrences

·          Attends to transportation issues at program site

·          Develops, implements and manages scheduling for students and staff

·          Communicates with department heads and attends department meetings upon request

·          Informs students and staff of procedures pertaining to participation in extra-curricular activities

·          Performs as an integral member of the therapeutic team

·          Relates in a helpful, positive, and efficient manner with peers, supervisors and all those in contact with SWCCCASE

·          Maintains highest level of confidentiality
