QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN)); National School Nurse Certification (NCSN) completed within two years of accepting position or Nurse Practitioner certification in related field to school nursing; Mater of Science in Nursing (MSN) or related field. (Desirable). Current license to practice nursing in the State of Texas as a Registered Nurse; Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/AED; Texas Department of Health certification in vision and hearing screening (recertification as required)
  • Five years’ experience as a school nurse

BASIC FUNCTIONS

  • Provides leadership in the establishment and maintenance of school health programs located in campuses within a select division
  • Coordinates and assists health services staff in the development and implementation of a comprehensive health program utilizing policies of the district and procedures and guidelines of the department
  • Facilitates and/or perform student evaluations and special procedures in district schools where staff nurse is not available or needs assistance
  • Facilitates and/or teaches, and monitors communicable disease prevention and provides control measures in accordance with state and local health department regulations, district policies and department guidelines
  • Assist with professional and paraprofessional educational growth activities in areas of nursing, health, and communication skills
  • Assumes responsibilities for teaching staff to record all health information on student electronic records according to department guidelines and procedures
  • Supervise and participates in formal and/or informal evaluations of department staff including nurses, facilitators, audiologists, and/or paraprofessional staff
  • Collaborates with other interdisciplinary school professionals, parents, caregivers, and members of the community to maximize communication and deliver health and social services to students and staff
  • Assist nurses, students, families and the school community to achieve optimal levels of wellness through medical referrals, interpretation of medical data, planning and implementing health counseling, health education, and by assisting in providing a safe and healthy environment e.g., coordinated School Health Program
  • Contributes to the knowledge base of nursing and school health through assisting with innovations in practice and participation in research-related activities
  • Identifies, delineates, and clarifies the nursing role, promotes quality of care, pursues continued professional enhancement and demonstrates professional conduct as outlined in the Texas Nursing Practice Act
  • Demonstrates effective communication through written, verbal, and computer usage skills
  • Assumes management of or additional health services programs/projects as determined by the director of Health Services
