Duties/Qualifications/Responsibilities
Minimum of a high school
diploma. Experience working with students with special
education needs preferred. Ability to assist staff by
performing instructional, monitoring and/or clerical duties,
associated with the classroom education and behavioral
development of special education students. May assist
with student in swimming pool or other adaptive physical
education activities. Ability to operate instructional
equipment. Responsible for the physical care of
student/s, which may include toileting, diapering (if student/s
is not trained), and feeding. Assist in transportation in
school building, including transfer from wheel chair to desk
chair or mat. Assist with range of motion
exercises. Assist with other Special Education Programs
within the building as directed. Ability to deal with
children with challenging behavior and to accept direction
while being motivated to be creative. Ability to work
one-on-one with a student. Must be flexible and willing
to adapt to student's needs on a multi-grade level.
Required to ride transportation vehicle. Computer and

Position Definition:
Assists teaching staff by
performing instructional, monitoring. or clerical duties
associated with the classroom education and behavioral
development of special education students.
General Duties:
Receives oral or written
instructions from the supervising teacher, organizes work
according to school schedule or special program.
Processes referral information for each student.
Maintains student cumulative records.
Presents subject matter to students according to teacher's
lesson plan.
Assists teacher in preparation of materials for instruction.
Distributes lesson plan materials to students.
Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson or
skill development assignment.
In specified programs, may provide occupational, or physical
therapy assistance according to a prescribed program, and
assists students with physical handicaps to participate as full
as possible in all school program activities.
Assists in administering and scoring tests which do not require
being done by a certified person.
Confers regularly with teacher on progress of students.
Records student progress in teacher log.
Reports work accomplished to supervising teacher
Additional Duties:
Assists in maintaining student
order in classroom and hallways.
Operates a variety of office equipment to copy and duplicate
instructional and informational materials.
Operates audio-visual equipment.
Operates reproduction and laminating equipment. Collates and
distributes materials.
Certain positions may require monitoring students on the school
bus and swimming pool.
Supervised By:
Receives general supervision from
principal and the Special Education Administrator, and the
regular and continuing supervision of specific duties from a
teacher.
Qualifications Profile:
The skill and knowledge required
would generally be acquired with a high school education and
some experience in working with children.
Abilty to relate to students, parents, teachers, and staff in a
positive effective manner.
Ability to present lesson and remedial materials in a clear and
efficient manner.
Ability to acquire skill to operate audio-visual, reproduction,
and laminating equipment.
Ability to type.
