Position Title: Substitute School Nurse
Location: Southampton County Public Schools Academy
Reports To: Principal
Job Summary:
The Substitute School Nurse is responsible for providing health services to students and staff in the absence of the regular school nurse. This role includes administering medication, managing chronic health conditions, providing first aid, and promoting a healthy school environment. The Substitute School Nurse collaborates with school staff and parents to address health-related concerns and ensure the well-being of students.
Key Responsibilities:
Health Services:
- Provide direct nursing care to students and staff, including first aid, emergency care, and management of acute and chronic health conditions.
- Administer medications and treatments according to physicians' orders and school policies.
- Monitor students with chronic health conditions and provide necessary care and interventions.
Health Assessments:
- Conduct health assessments and screenings, including vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings.
- Maintain accurate health records and documentation for students and staff.
- Identify and refer students with potential health issues to appropriate healthcare providers.
Health Education:
- Provide health education and counseling to students, staff, and parents on topics such as nutrition, hygiene, and disease prevention.
- Promote a healthy school environment through education and awareness programs.
- Collaborate with teachers and staff to integrate health education into the curriculum.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with school administrators, teachers, and staff to support students' health and well-being.
- Communicate regularly with parents regarding their child's health needs and any concerns.
- Coordinate with community health resources to provide additional support and services to students and families.
Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, school policies, and procedures related to health services.
- Maintain confidentiality of student health information in accordance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
- Participate in emergency preparedness and response planning for the school.
Qualifications:
- Valid state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
- Previous experience in school nursing, pediatric nursing, or a related field preferred.
- Knowledge of current nursing practices, procedures, and protocols.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in emergency situations.
- Proficiency in the use of technology for documentation and communication.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit, stand, and move freely for extended periods.
- Capacity to lift and move medical equipment and supplies as necessary.
- Ability to supervise and interact with students in a variety of settings.
Work Environment:
- Work is performed in a school setting and may require traveling between classrooms and schools.
- Occasional evening and weekend work may be required for school events and meetings.
