Purpose Statement: The role of the Paraprofessional - ESOL is to support classroom teachers with the seamless integration of technology into the learning environment, assist with interventions, instruction, and supervise students in the classroom and learning commons as scheduled. This position reports to the Building Administrator.
Essential Functions:
- Resource Assistance: Aid students and staff in locating print and non-print resources using the commons catalog and internet.
- Technology Education: Assist with online technology education for students and staff in collaboration with classroom teachers.
- Professional Development: Attend workshops and in-service training as required by the district to stay informed and compliant with guidelines.
- Instructional Collaboration: Work with the ESOL Case Manager and classroom teachers to customize assignments and provide assistance to ESOL students.
- Strategy Development: Create study guides, notes, and visual aids to ensure students stay focused and succeed with assignments.
- Technology Integration: Demonstrate the use of technology tools (e.g., voice threads, response systems, document sharing) in the curriculum.
- Instructional Support: Implement instructional activities as prescribed by classroom teachers to aid in student achievement.
- English Language Support: Provide assistance to students learning English, using definitions, examples, non-verbal clues, and responses to facilitate understanding.
- Reinforcement of Learning: Implement behavior management programs and reinforce learning opportunities through supplementary work and data collection.
- Student Supervision: Supervise and instruct individual students or small groups according to the teacher's lesson plan.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
- Skills: Proficient in handling hazardous materials, operating standard office equipment, and using pertinent software applications. Must be adaptable to changing job conditions.
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of child guidance principles, basic subjects taught in District schools, instructional materials and techniques used in Special Education, and safe practices in classroom activities. Must have excellent command of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
- Abilities: Able to schedule activities/meetings, gather and collate data, and use job-related equipment. Must demonstrate flexibility, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work with diverse individuals and data.
- Work under direct supervision using standardized routines. Provide information and advice to others, and operate within a defined budget. Some resources from other work units may be required.
- Physical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. The job generally requires 70% sitting, 20% walking, and 10% standing. The work environment is generally clean and healthy.
- Job-related experience in a designated second language is required.
- Targeted, job-related education with study in the relevant area.
