Description
IDEA Public Charter High School became a Military Academy in SY 05-06. The school has earned full accreditation from the Middle States Accredition. IDEA is a career focused, academic high school which prepares middle and high school students (grades 7-12) for college or for careers in robotics, drafting, computer repair, or the military service, if they choose. IDEA was founded by a group of retired military instructors and civilian teachers in 1997. The school is based on the Department of Defenses's JROTC Career Academy model. IDEA provides advanced placement college preparatory courses in English, calculus and chemistry. IDEA's mandatory JROTC program address self-discipline, leadership training and citizenship skills. In addition to the career-focused course of study, the school relies on partnerships with employers in the industry. These business partners will provide summer/part-time jobs and internships for students as well as providing mentoring, tutoring, and instructional and curriculum support for teachers and students. The school’s present location is in Ward 7 in the old Carver Elementary School at 1027 45th Street in Northeast Washington, DC.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Integrated Design Electronics Academy (IDEA) Public Charter School Military Academy is to develop young people with the academic, social, leadership and occupational skills to compete successfully in post secondary education/training and enter challenging careers in the technical fields of work. IDEA will prepare students for the competitive high-tech careers now required in the 21st century. The school will develop students who will not only have improved test and aptitude scores but will work more cohesively as team members. This will be achieved through a unique learning environment and enhanced career opportunities that include effective integration of academic and technological career training in electronics, computer repair, engineering design (AutoCad) and the leadership skills training of the mandatory military Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program. Upon graduation, students will enter college, obtain employment in a needed career field, or join the military.
